Doane students age 21 and over have a choice every Thursday: whether or not to go to the bar.
Those that choose to go say their time at college night is spent with friends, and that going out on Thursdays is more about socializing than drinking.
Junior Bryce Schouboe says he tries to go to college night at least once or twice a month.
“(I go) to hang out with friends and to let loose,” he said.
Senior Moises Valadez says he has perfect attendance, meaning he has not missed a single college night this year.
“It (college night) gives me a chance to see people I normally don’t see on campus,” said Valadez. “One thing is that being a part of Greek Life is you’re separated by your colors and what you stand for. But at the bar, your one community.”
Junior Morgan Doehring uses college night as a time to socialize, she says.
“It’s a very fun social atmosphere,” Doehring said. “Its (college night) a good time for us to be with our friends.”
Doehring says she goes to college night most weeks.
Junior Karly Nitsch tries to go every week as well, but does not let college night get in the away of her academics or responsibilities, she said. She skips going out whenever she has an early morning or homework to do, she said.
Like the others, Nitsch said she goes to college nights to spend time with friends.
Most students say they typically choose to drink beer, often Bud Light, because it is more affordable than pricier beers or hard alcohol.
