Women's Basketball Head Coach Sheronda Powell resigns, effective immediately

Doane University’s Head Women’s Basketball Coach Sheronda Powell resigned today, effective immediately.  

The announcement was made by Doane’s Athletic Director Matt Franzen Monday afternoon. 

“We want to thank Coach Powell for her time at Doane and wish her the best,” said Franzen.

Powell’s resignation is the third one this month on the team, following Assistant Coach Marissa Webb as well as Graduate Assistant Daymarcco Green, according to a press release sent to The Crete News.

The Athletic Department chose not to comment at this time.

Powell has been the Head Coach for about three months after being hired on Jul. 24, 2019 and resigned mid-season. The team is currently 0-6 overall, and 0-3 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.

Ryan Baumgartner, Men’s Basketball team Assistant Coach, will be filling Powell’s position starting Wed. Nov. 27, and will coach the women’s team for the remainder of the season, stated the press release.

Baumgartner will be accompanied by former Doane Women’s Basketball Head Coach Gene Steinmeyer at the beginning of January 2020 as an assistant coach. Steinmeyer lead the women’s team from 1984-2000, reaching the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics semi-finals in 1996, 97’, and 98’.

Rick Schmuecker, former Women’s Basketball team Assistant Coach and will be serving as the head coach for the women in their game against College of Saint Mary in Omaha on Tues. Nov. 26 until Baumgartner takes his new position.

Schmuecker was the Assistant Coach for the women’s program from 2003-2012, and is also the current Assistant Athletic Director for Athletics Communication.
