The men’s soccer team defeated Dordt in a 2-0 victory to start their conference season at Al Papik Field.
Of the last 10 matchups against Dordt, the Tigers have come away on top nine times, with this last game being the third victory against them in a row.
“The past couple weeks we’ve been getting to know each other on and off the field a lot better, and that really showed Saturday. We communicated a lot better and moved the ball as a team really well,” sophomore Andreus Abner said.
After both teams were scoreless in the first half, junior Josh Bundy made the first goal in the 53rd minute, with a 32 yard volley that bounced off the underside of the crossbar.
Bundy scored again in the 82nd minute, kicking a penalty shot earned by junior Chandler Farnsworth.
Senior goalie Nishesh Yadav kept Dordt off the board the entire game, posting three saves.
“I think we get better every day as a team, we have some injuries and new guys all trying to get better every day. We play in a very difficult conference, it’s the deepest it’s been since I’ve been at Doane,” coach Jeff Voigt said.
With their second win in a row, Voigt said that consistency will be the key to continuing their success.
“We are starting to do a lot of things well, and once we get some consistency, winning will become easy. This team is different because of our youth, if we get (and stay) healthy, they will accomplish great things over the next few years,” Voigt said.
Abner is optimistic that the team will continue to improve moving forward.
“I think now we’re in a better position than before to make progress as a team, going forward now into games that have more at stake in the end result,” Abner said.
The men’s soccer played again on Sept. 24, at Al Papik Field where they lost 3-0 to Waldorf University.
Doane was out-shot in the game 17-9 and 7-3 for shots on-goal. Doane goalie Nishesh Yadav picked up four saves and Waldorf goalie picked up three.
Doane men’s soccer will travel to Orange City, Iowa on Sept. 28, to take on Northwestern College.
