It was a rough weekend at home for both the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams. Both teams were defeated by University of Jamestown on Feb. 2 before falling to Dakota Wesleyan University on Feb. 3.
The first game played saw the Women’s team take on Jamestown. It was a very close game throughout the first half, as neither team was able to pull more than a few points ahead. However, the second half saw the Jimmies start to heat up from behind the arc.
Jamestown by the end of the game had nine three-point baskets compared to the Tigers’ two. Despite keeping the lead under double digits for the entire game, Doane was unable to ever secure a lead and would fall 6774.
The Men’s team was up against the Jimmies next. Jamestown had a quick lead in the first half they refused to let go of, despite a great second half effort by Doane. The Tigers added another loss to their record after falling to Jamestown, 66-76.
Both teams had no time for recovery as they had to take the court against Dakota Wesleyan the next day. Once again, it was the Women’s team that kicked things off against DWU. The Tigers and DWU both had an impressive first quarter, shooting over 50 percent from the floor. The second and third quarter was fairly evenly matched between the two teams, but an impressive fourth quarter allowed DWU to pull away and win 76-62.
The Men’s team then took to the court and received almost zero calls in their favor as they appeared at the free throw line once compared to DWU’s six appearances. Despite a solid push in the second half to overcome the discrepancy in fouls, the Tigers could not complete the comeback and fell 70-79.
Both teams now face a stretch of road games, starting with Mount Marty University in Yankton, South Dakota on Feb. 7. They will then head to Sioux City, Iowa to play against Briar Cliff University on Feb. 10.
