The Division of Diversity of Equity and Inclusion (DEI) is hosting a Tigerama Multicultural Festival, and they are looking for committee members. The event is designed to celebrate the diversity of Doane University, as Doane hosts a large range of students embodying different cultures.
The Multicultural Festival is completely student-run, where students fill out leadership positions, such as committee planners and event coordinators and get to say that they helped show off the different cultures that are represented and celebrated at Doane University.
The Committee Chair overseeing this event and senior, Mia Guerrero, commented on the inspiration behind the event.
“I was inspired to bring this event to life after attending a Pacific/Asian festival. I am absolutely in love and proud of my culture and I wanted to share that as well as give other students a chance to,” Guerrero said.
The event itself is scheduled for sometime in April, but applications for seats on the committee are open currently, and every student received an email regarding the application that needs to be submitted to join the committee.
Yet if having a position of leadership is frightening, the committee will be looking for student volunteers later down the road, to help with preparing the event itself, including students who want to show off and celebrate their specific cultures at the events.
“I believe this is very important to the Doane community because it shows that anyone at Doane including faculty can have a voice. This event gives you a chance to share what made or shaped who you are today and also gives people the chance to learn and appreciate the diversity in our school,” Guerrero said.
