Doane is Love is held Feb. 12 through Feb. 16 this year. What started off as a counter-protest for the legalization of gay marriage has turned into a week-long celebration of all forms of love. After the Doane Owl published an article supporting gay marriage in 2015, they were met with protests. As a counter-protest, stu- dents gathered in Cassel
Open Air Amphitheatre in what was called Doane is Love.
This tradition has come a long way since 2015, going through sev- eral transitions and chal- lenges including Covid.
Yet the messaging is as important as ever.
“Doane is Love is about visibility of queer relationships and the visi- bility of love in general. I want to be clear that Do- ane Is Love is not just a celebration for queer stu-
dents, but it is an encom- passing celebration for all kinds of love, intimate love, familial love, self- love, etc.,” PRISM Pres- ident Rowan Jolkowski said.
This year, each day of Doane is Love is themed with a different type of love. These include phil- ia love, storge love, eros love, philautia love and agape love which mean friend love, family love, passionate love, self love and selfless love, respec-
tively.
“Love is a beautiful thing and I would argue it is the one thing that ev- eryone can relate to and take joy in,” Jolkowski said.
All of these events are hosted by People for the Rights of Individu- als of Sexual Minorities (PRISM) with several partnerships occurring as well, including Alpha Pi Epsilon Fraternity, Campus Advocacy, Pre- vention and Education (CAPE) Project and the
Student Programming Board.
Monday, Feb. 12 will start with friend love and will feature bracelet mak- ing at the Beige Desk in Perry Campus Center.
Tuesday will host a potluck celebrating “cho- sen families.” The $3 en- try will go to the Trevor Project, which raises awareness and works to prevent LGBTQ+ youth suicide.
Wednesday will offer tools for safe sex, host
a flower sale and have a
build-a-boo event.
There will be cookie decorating and gay jeop- ardy on Thursday and the week will conclude with a Drag show and Valen- tine’s Ball.
“Everyone should par- ticipate, and is invited to participate because love is a beautiful thing and it is hard to feel loved all the time,” Jolkowski said.
