Schmidt lands internship in D.C.

As the summer comes closer and closer, many students are picking up internships or preparing to study afar in hopes of expanding their horizons and learning in a new environment. For freshman Johnathan Schmidt he will get the opportunity to do both as he is the first student ever to receive an internship by the Fund for American Studies and he will be both an intern on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. and be a student at George Mason University.

“The thing that I am most excited to do in my time at Washington D.C. is experience the different cultures that make up the melting pot that is the United States, and further round my personality and experience going into my professional life,” Schmidt said.

The program that Schmidt is enrolled in is an educational nonprofit that allows students the unique opportunity to work directly with people in the policymaking process. Schmidt says this program is a stepping-off point for his potential career in law and is grateful for his Doane education preparing him for this internship.

“I plan on representing Doane University by being respectful of the program, and especially to the people that I meet, as more likely than not, they will be important people within the policy-making process,” Schmidt said. “My Doane education helps me be meticulous with what I do, as it is what is expected out of my papers that I write here at Doane.”

Students who are interested in studying abroad or enrolling in summer courses can talk to their professors for specific programs that interest them, Director of International Programs Tim Burdge if they wish to study abroad, or Director of Career, Leadership and Service Development Quint Geis for potential internships.
