The ACUI Collegiate Clay Target National Championships were held in San Antonio, Texas from March 20 to March 23. The trip was very successful for the Doane Shooting Sports team, who placed fourth as a team overall and brought home a championship in one team event and three individual event championships.
Senior Payton Detavernier earned herself two championships and a tenth place finish overall on the Women’s side with 545 points. Detavernier won trap shooting with a 99 and tying, which resulted in a shootout that she would win 75-73. She also won the doubles trap with a final score of 95.
Junior Jess Himmelberg brought in 483 points, which placed her 81st overall. Himmelberg also found success in the trap shooting, tying for sixteenth in the event.
On the Men’s side, sophomore Cody Eye won the doubles trap event after also going to a shootout after initially tying with a score of 97. The shootout brought Eye the victory as he posted a 19-18 win.
Junior Sam Arnett was runner up to teammate Eye in the doubles trap. Seniors Skylar Clark and Seth Swinea both earned fourth place finishes: Clark in the trap shoot with a score of 99 and Swinea in doubles trap with a score of 96. Freshman Beau Gyhra earned 536 points and senior Jaron Brown earned 502. The Tigers won the doubles trap event as a team, with Detavernier, Eye, Arnett, Swinea and Clark all earning top placements and scoring 480. With a final score of 2,749, the Tigers returned home with an impressive fourth place finish.
