Doane is hosting two writing contests that offer cash prizes. There are two writing contests, one for first year students and one for the general Doane undergraduate population. Both contests are called the Marianne Clarke Writing Excellence Award, one is specifically labeled for the first-year students, and the other is labeled “At Large.” The first-year writing contest is an extemporaneous writing contest, which means that a participant gets a prompt, and there is a limited amount of time to write something in response to that prompt.
For first year students who want to enter the contest, they should contact English Professor Brad Johnson at brad. johnson@doane.edu with their full name and the last 4 digits of their student ID number.
The contest takes place on April 2 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Gaylord Hall room 500 with cash prizes totaling $1,000.
For the at-large writing contest, students can submit their work to a submission portal attached to an email sent out to all students. This email also instructs students on the rules and regulations of the contest. For the at-large contest, the cash prizes total $2,000.
“Marianne Clarke, a 1938 Doane graduate, who enjoyed a distinguished career in journalism as a writer and editor. In memory of this legacy, the Clarke family established the Marianne Clarke Writing Excellence contest in 1987 as a tribute to excellence in writing with an endowed fund,” Professor Phil Weitl said.
There is no established meeting time and place for the at large contest, as it is an online submission.
