In a thrilling doubleheader showdown on Saturday afternoon in Crete, Nebraska, the Doane Tigers’ softball team squared off against the Dordt University Defenders in what proved to be a pair of exciting contests. Despite a brave effort, the Tigers ultimately fell short in both encounters, with scores of 6-5 and 5-3.
The opener saw Doane seize an early advantage, with two runs in the third inning setting the tone. Junior Grace Dowding’s sacrifice bunt paved the way for freshman Kennedy Walter’s run, which was quickly followed by freshman Jeryn Allen’s single, which brought junior Lexi Alaniz-Diaz across the plate. However, Dordt rallied in the
fourth inning, snatching the lead with three runs. Determined, the Tigers fought back in the bottom half of the inning, sparked by senior Payton Cooley’s two RBIs, putting them ahead 4-3 after four innings. Despite a late surge from Dordt, Doane attempted a comeback in the final inning but fell short, suffering a 6-5 defeat.
Game one highlights included standout performances from Alaniz-Diaz, who secured two hits and two runs, and Colley, leading the team with two RBIs. Sophomore pitcher Abby Arroyo delivered a resilient effort, pitching a complete game despite Doane’s loss.
In the second game, Dordt took an early lead with a solo home run in the second inning, quickly countered by junior Marisa Marquez, leveling the score. The Tigers surged ahead in the third inning, thanks to freshman Katelyn Hays’ double, bringing Allen home to give them a 2-1 lead. However, Dordt fought back, tying the game in the sixth inning before seizing the lead in the seventh, ultimately securing a 5-3 victory.
Marquez shone for Doane, contributing two hits and a run scored in game two. Despite a resilient performance from senior pitcher Sarah Shevenell, who tallied six strikeouts, the Tigers couldn’t overcome Dordt’s rise.
Looking ahead, Doane will aim to bounce back in a make-up game against Briar Cliff on April 16, in Sioux City, Iowa, seeking to regain momentum in the season.
