SPB goes to Omaha Zoo

On April 13, students went and visited the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo as part of a Doane Student Programming Board (SPB) event. Twenty students from Doane attended the trip, each one having their own entrance fee and travel paid for through the school.

The Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo is renowned as not only one of the best zoos in the country but also the world and is known for its vast range of exhibits, each one acclaimed with state-of-theart facilities and a diverse range of animals.

Doane SPB organized the trip in part to show the Henry Doorly Zoo to students, not from Nebraska or who are unfamiliar with the zoo entirely. The trip not only shows students what is present in Nebraska but also helps build and foster community.

“This zoo trip was a day getaway to explore new places and make memories with your school friends or organization,” sophomore and SPB member Jessica Villanueva said. “These SPB events bring the students of Doane to come together and have a sense of community.”

Students showed up right around opening time so they could freely explore the entire zoo and at their own pace. Villanueva and Doane SPB hope events like these can encourage students to not only interact with each other but with their community as well, whether it be in Crete or in the greater Nebraska area.

The Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo has several programs available for older patrons. On May 30, the zoo will feature an event for adults over the age of 21 where they can explore the zoo after hours and have drinks. Doane SPB will also continue to host more events for students to engage in to help further their connection to Doane and the surrounding community.
