On Wednesday, April 17, members of Student Congress (StuCo) went around the residence halls at 7 a.m. to wake up their peers for the annual and long-awaited Stop Day. Junior Blake Skoumal, the 2024-25 StuCo president, was blown away by the amount of people who participated in Stop Day.
“I loved seeing everyone at volleyball and cornhole this year,” Skoumal said. “In years past we have separated the two events but having both events happen concurrently made the environment more electric.”
Along with sand volleyball and cornhole, there was also a spelling bee, canoe races, a wing-eating contest, dodgeball and Doane Idol.
Winning sand volleyball was junior Britney Hoffman, sophomores Emma Sorensen, Ashton Sagehorn, Lily Vaughn, Harper Case, Jarett Boggs and freshman Keegan Shuler.
For the spelling bee, it was freshman John Schmidt who walked away with the first victory and senior Zeke Krejci-Hyde grabbed the second. The canoe races were won by freshmen Chaney Nelson, Abbie Ferraci, Carter Baete and Isaac Pistulka.
For cornhole, the winners were juniors Hunter Bennett and Kasten
Grape, and the wing contest was won by sophomore Savannah Franzoy. For dodgeball, the winner was the wrestling team, and for Doane Idol, it was Phi Sigma Tau’s pledge class of 2024.
“The students’ favorite for as long as I remember is sand volleyball,” Skoumal said. “We have over 200 people sign up and play this year. I think it is super well liked because it is our first event of the day and a great start to Stop Day.”
Next year Skoumal will have the opportunity to plan Stop Day, but along that, he is also excited to see what new and improved items StuCo will bring to the table when it comes to activities, prizes and a variety of other things.
