Tennis completes regular season

The Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams were battling teams on the road this week, starting in Hastings, Nebraska, before heading over to Fremont, Nebraska. Both teams were able to start their journey off with a win before falling to their second opponent.

The Tennis teams began their week on the road against Hastings College. The Men’s team kicked off their matches with a clean sweep against the Broncos of 7-0. Meanwhile, the Women’s team kept their postseason hopes alive with a narrow victory of 4-3.

It started with freshman Maria Purizaca Soto and sophomore Grace Schroller who easily won their doubles match 6-1. Freshman Isabella Castillero and senior Emily Guiton then added a second victory in the doubles matches with a win of 6-2.

Purizaca Soto, Castillero and Guiton all went on to win their singles matches. Purizaca Soto added another clean sweep of 6-0, 6-0 and Guiton finished her match with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Castillero sent her match into a tie break to win 6-3, 2-6 and 6-3.

After a well-fought match against the Broncos, both teams headed to take on Midland University. The Men’s team took on the Warriors first, faltering in doubles matches. The only doubles team to take a match was senior Esteban Gutierrez and junior Jose Purizaca, who won 7-6.

In singles matches, Purizaca won after forcing a tiebreak to go 6-7, 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Andre Hartman won in very close matches 7-6, 7-5 while freshman Elliot Dassel also forced a tiebreak by going 6-7, 6-2, 1-0. The Men’s team barely fell 3-4.

Meanwhile, the Women’s team dropped all doubles matches against the Warriors. Purizaca Soto finished with a perfect regular season record by winning 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Kat Johnson was the only other Tiger to win singles matches 6-2, 7-5.

The Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams now head to the Great Plains Athletic Conference Championships in Sioux City, Iowa, on April 26 and 27.
