Women’s Soccer kicks off season

On Aug. 9 the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) released the 2024 Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Preseason Poll where out of the 12 teams, Doane received 9th with 42 points. 

With this, Doane traveled up to Montana to open up their season against the Battlin Bear where the Battlin Bears secured a win from the Tigers. Starting off with the game, Battlin Bears Mila Allison scored the first goal of the game, where she also flipped a shot to the back post after she won a tight battle for a loose ball. At the end of the first half, the Battlin Bears were up 1-0. 

In the second half of the game, Battlin Bears Mya Maack scored another goal for the Battlin Bears, making the ending score be 2-0. 

Throughout the game, sophomore Virginia Johnson had seven saves in goal and juniors Savannah Franzoy and Celeste Galvan both had three attempted shots and junior Machenzy Gipson, senior Brooklyn Mercurio, and junior McKenna Rathbun had one attempted shot, raising the grand total to 10. 

Going into their next game, the Tigers competed against Providence Montana. Within the first thirty minutes of the game there were zero points made from both teams, however in the 31st minute freshman Hayle Brodine scored her first career goal and the first goal in the game. At the end of the first half the score was 1-0. 

In the second half of the game had a dry start, but in the 70th minute Brodine scored her second goal to now make the score 2-0. The goalkeeper for the Tigers was freshman Ella Hale where she had five saved throughout the 90 minute game. 

The Tigers will be traveling to Leavenworth, Kansas on Aug. 24 to face College of Saint Mary.
