The Academic Success Center at Doane is looking for a student to work as a Spanish writing consultant starting this spring. The supervisor for this job is Jeremy Caldwell, director of the Writing Center (jeremy.caldwell@doane.edu).

This job’s primary goal is to support students at any point during the writing process, whether they require assistance with idea generation, organization, proofreading or even brainstorming. This assistance is offered for various writing needs, including professional, academic and personal writing. In a consultant role, the student worker would interact with colleagues via face-to-face meetings, emails or asynchronous feedback, to assist them in developing their writing abilities and achieving more clarity in their work.

There are some critical abilities and credentials that are mandatory and necessary to succeed in this role. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 is required, which demonstrates excellent academic standing and a willingness to help others. Proficiency in both written and oral communication is necessary to provide insightful critiques and to clearly explain writing concepts.

The consultant deals with a wide spectrum of students; therefore, being able to collaborate well with a diverse student body is essential. To ensure that every student feels encouraged and appreciated in their writing journey, it is necessary to work with classmates in a courteous, collected and respectful manner. Moreover, a passion for writing is essential. The job is more meaningful and powerful if you have faith in your own writing skills and a sincere desire to help others write better.

Together with excellent problem-solving and critical thinking abilities, the position also calls for an openness to learning, sharing and commenting on writing tactics and procedures. These qualities aid in the navigation of language and writing difficulties for consultants, guaranteeing that criticism addresses deeper problems with content and organization rather than just superficial fixes.

This job has a minimum hour requirement of 6 hours per week and a maximum hour requirement of 17 hours per week. The hourly wage will start at $12.

Being a Spanish writing consultant is a great opportunity to develop oneself as a student-worker and as a person. It is a chance to gain experience and help other university students.
