Students preparing for Relay for Life

As the school year ramps up, so do preparations for Relay for Life, a global fundraising event organized by the American Cancer Society to raise funds to support cancer research, patient services and education. Relay for Life aims to promote awareness about prevention and treatment, provide community and help honor those affected by cancer.

“Relay for Life helps build a strong sense of community as everyone unites for a common cause. It creates opportunities for collaboration and connection among students, faculty, and staff, fostering relationships that can last beyond the event,” Marketing and Social Media Chair for Doane Relay for Life and junior Trenton Johanson said. “This shared mission not only enhances the campus culture but also encourages a supportive environment for those affected by cancer, making it a powerful initiative for everyone involved.”

Johanson wants to raise awareness for cancer because of how important it is to provide as many resources as possible to people who need it. He believes that engaging with the community allows the word to spread about Relay for Life and can hopefully encourage more people to give time and resources.

“Doane’s involvement in Relay for Life can play a crucial role in fundraising, as the collective efforts of students, faculty, and staff can lead to substantial contributions. The funds raised support vital cancer research, improve patient care, and fund educational programs that empower individuals to make informed health choices,” Johanson said. “By rallying together, Doane can make a significant impact on the fight against cancer, helping to advance research and provide essential resources for those in need. It’s a powerful way to turn community spirit into tangible support for a critical cause.”

Johanson wants Doane to actively participate in Relay for Life in hopes of making the fight for cancer a little easier. Updates for Relay for Life can be found on their Instagram @doanerelay and you can donate to Relay for Life in their bio.
