Be spooky with the English Department

With Halloween being right around the corner, events thematically appropriate for the spooky season are happening. The English Department is putting on a lot of these events for students, whether they are English majors or not, to attend.

The nearest event that the English Department is putting on is titled, “Write Out Loud.” Write Out Loud is an event that happens just about every semester and it’s an opportunity for writers to have an open platform to share their works.

This time around, the Writing Center is partnering with the New Xanadu to host this event. Students who are interested in participating in this event have to contact the writing center at writingcenter@doane.edu.

The next event that the English Department is putting on is a yearly tradition called “The Ghosts of Gaylord.” There is this conception that the Gaylord building, the oldest standing building on Doane’s campus is haunted by ghosts and so, every year, the English Department puts on this event.

This year, the movie that they have selected to be shown is titled, “Late Night With The Devil.”

“Late Night With the Devil,” is, according to IMDb, “A live television broadcast in 1977 goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation’s living rooms.” Essentially, imagine if Jimmy Fallon summoned Satan on live TV. The movie stars David Dastmalchian. One of his most recent roles was Polka Dot Man in “The Suicide Squad.”

Afterward, another staple of this time of year is the Fireside event. The Fireside event this time around is focused on letting students tell ghost stories from around campus. The Fireside event is hosted by The New Xanadu.

The Write Out Loud event is happening Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. The Ghosts of Gaylord event is being held in Gaylord 500 on Oct. 30 at 5:00 p.m., with the Fireside Halloween edition happening after 7:00 p.m. in the Smith Patio area.
