On Oct. 22, Doane’s Student Programming Board (SPB) will be hosting another installment in their Coffee Shop Series. For the uninformed out there, The Coffee Shop Series is a series that focuses on bringing local musical talent from the Lincoln and Lincoln area and having them perform at Doane University.

Alongside the performances, SPB also hosts arts and crafts for students to do while they listen to the music. The musical talent that Doane brings in to perform ranges from folk-country to hip-hop.

This time around, SPB decided to bring in the local up-and-coming artist named Ris. Ris hails from Lincoln, NE and performs R&B music. R&B is an acronym for Rhythm and Blues music and was a genre popularized in the 1940s and the 1960s.

Notable artists who perform R&B include Childish Gambino on his record, “‘Awaken, My Love!’”, the Blues Brothers, Marvin Gaye and Barry White. R&B music has persisted throughout the decades because of its ever-evolving nature of flow.

In terms of arts and crafts this time around, SPB picked Pumpkin Painting because of the season and the fact that Halloween is around the corner. Past arts and crafts included: mini pots for plants, canvases for painting (a series that SPB calls “Painting With a Twist”), mugs and friendship bracelets.

Ris’ most popular song on Spotify is “Ran W It.” Ris will be performing in Lakeside on Oct. 22 from 7 to 9 p.m.

The Coffee Shop Series from the SPB is a very regular program, so students who can’t make this one will most likely have another opportunity sometime later this semester.
