Greek Life offers a preview

All throughout this past and present week, Greek life has been alive decorating different rooms around campus preparing for their rush process with their new members. Their biggest event during these two weeks has been the Open House from Nov. 12 to Nov. 21, where all members from fraternities and sororities gather with students who are notoriously interested in this specific group, to share lively memories, get to know each other a bit more deeply and create new experiences together.

One of the past Open Houses has been from Gamma Phi Iota sorority, who are all involved in a variety of sports, groups and activities all over campus. With 19 active members and one active alumni, this sorority is looking for people who are their true authentic selves and can share their best with others. Using this event to prepare for the rushing process next year around Jan. 15th, they will share their own unique traditions to let new members get to know their culture, as newcomers find their home.

Another of the past Open Houses has been the Alpha Omega fraternity, who currently have nine active members and with this event, they wanted to get their name out for others to see. This was an open space for all of those who wanted to know more about this fraternity, hang out and meet all the guys who extend their hand in a more personal way since it brings the opportunity to get closer as they are a smaller fraternity group. Looking forward, another event hosted by Alpha Omega is the Late Night Breakfast, it’d be a nice place to get to know more about their members and how they work their way through Doane.

Indulging more into Greek life at Doane, Delta Kappa Pi, the oldest fraternity on campus, presented their Open House last week as well. Currently, with 23 active members, this group prides itself on an environment that stresses strong academic achievement, leadership, community service, and campus involvement. Having their members involved in over 90% of athletics and student organizations, their goal for this Open House was to get to know others while connecting over something exciting with a touch of competitiveness.

Joining some Open Houses for this week, Phi Sigma Tau sorority wants to introduce themselves and show off their dynamics by emphasizing being proud of themselves individually and that differences are their greatest weaknesses. With their own motto: ‘unapologetically ourselves’, Phi Sigma Tau loves each member unconditionally and will show support each time there is a struggle; striving for growth and excellence, not only academically or athletically, but most importantly, in a personal manner. Nov. 19th, in Gaylord 500 at 8:00 p.m., a trivia night awaits you, where the members would like to create a comforting, personable, and fun environment while giving insight into what their group is about.

Last but not least, Alpha Pi Epsilon, was a group founded by individuals over 50 years ago that wanted to go against the status quo of other fraternities of the time, pushing to have fun, but have their members feel safe and accepted without the feeling of having “strings attached”. With their Open House on Nov. 18th, this fraternity is giving the opportunity for all those interested to get to know the members, and more information through a casual environment with video games, snacks, and drinks. Knowing more about them, they host annual fundraisers such as Summer’s End ‘Xtravaganza (S.E.X.) happens to raise money for Crete Family Health Services to promote safe sex on campus, and volunteer opportunities such as the Backpacking program at UCC church and Highway Cleanup. Gathering knowledge of Greek life here at Doane helps to be more prepared for the rush process early next year, and will be an exciting time for both soon-to-be new members and the fraternities and sororities ready to accept them.
