Every year, Doane University welcomes a new Honors cohort, which is a group of students who strive for academic excellence and hope to push themselves educationally, whether its at Doane, abroad or after graduation. This year, Doane welcomed 20 new students to the program and these students are poised to continue Doanes storied Honors program.
“I am very excited about this new cohort of Honors students. Every year, each cohort brings fresh perspectives, intellectual curiosity, and energy. This year, we had a record number of applicants, including students from many different walks of life. In my experience, diverse cohorts make for an engaging honors culture, a culture that positively impacts the entire Doane community.” Director of the Doane Honors Program and Assistant Professor of Sociology Andrea Johnson said.
The past couple of years have seen a return to form for the Honors Program, which was almost shut down in but has now seen a resurgence in students and newfound institutional support to encourage students to not only join, but stay in the program.
“It takes a village. My predecessors laid the groundwork in prioritizing intellectualism on Doane’s campus. The current administration understands the importance of an Honors Program and invests in our students. And of course, Doane Honors students help promote the program by being leaders inside and out of the classroom,” Johnson said “I am so proud of the work we have done and I look forward to welcoming new generations of honors students for many years to come.”
Johnson believes that this program can help students reach their full potential, create cultural awareness and connections via programs like study abroad and leave a lasting impact on Doane when their time in the Honors Program is done.
