On April 15, the Women’s Tennis team won the final match of the regular season against Concordia University in an away conference game by a score of 4-3. The Tigers end the regular season with a great overall 12-6 record and 5-1 in conference, with only one loss, 3-4 against Morningside University. In general, it has been a great season for the women’s tennis team, which finished in second place in the regular phase.
“The girls have had a really successful season, showing a lot of improvement that has come through all of the hard work and dedication on and off the court,” Federico Infante, the graduate assistant coach, said. “They have proven not only to the school but to the whole conference that they were a day 1 contender to take the title and they got extremely close to bringing it home. Now we are focused on having the best result possible at the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) nationals playoffs, where they will be coming in as the #2 seeds.”
In doubles, No. 1 senior Mariana Espinosa and sophomore Maria Purizaca prevailed 6-4. At No. 2 doubles, freshman Liz Calderon and junior Grace Schroller won 6-3. At No. 3 doubles, sophomore Isabella Castillero and sophomore Kat Johnson lost 3-6.
In singles, Purizaca won the No. 1 game 6-3, 6-3, while Espinosa lost the No. 2 singles 4-6, 5-7. In singles No. 3, Calderon recorded 6-2, 6-4. At No. 4, Castillero lost 4-6, 4-6. In singles No. 5, Schroller lost 0-6, 1-6. Finally, in singles No. 6, Johnson won 7-6 (7-3 tie-break), 4-6, 6-4.
Next for the Tigers will be the GPAC tournament that will start on April 25 and will take place at Morningside University. As the women’s team qualified for the tournament in second place, they will start in the semifinal.
