New eBook program launches at Doane

New to campus is the Tiger eBook program, which provides digital copies of required course materials directly through Canvas. The program adds $260 to the tuition for Crete campus students each semester.

Once enrolled in a class, students can access their materials by clicking on the “My Materials” button on Canvas. If students do not see their books displayed, they should check that they have selected the correct semester in the top left corner of their screen.

Most eBooks are compatible with computers, laptops, tablets and phones, though some may have limits on how many devices a book can be downloaded to. However, certain books may restrict the amount that can be printed or copied/pasted.

But not all students are supporters of digital books. Some feel that the eBook fee is higher than what they would have paid for individual digital copies, while others simply prefer working with physical books. Being unable to write or highlight text is a major drawback for some.

For those students, an opt-out option is available. An email from the service center was sent out on July 22 containing the link to opt out, which must be completed before Aug. 29. Students who opt out have the option to opt back in before this deadline.

It is important to note that the program also covers physical course materials, which can be picked up directly from the campus bookstore. Students will not need to pay for these physical materials, as they are included in the course charges.

Some books may be available in physical form through the bookstore, but could incur additional charges. Gwendolyn Lopez, Director of Disability Services, can be contacted at accessibility@doane.edu for ADA accommodations related to this new program.

For majors requiring heavy reading and constant textbook purchases, this new program has been a weight off their shoulders. However, for many, staff and students alike, the serviceability of this program has yet to be determined.
