Gamma Phi Iota wins Spirit Cup,

Friday night saw the return of Homecoming’s most popular event, Pep Rally/Skit Night. The event featured skits from multiple on-campus groups, as well as the winners of the shield, banner, window, spirit cup and homecoming royalty were announced.

With performances by cheer and dance, a speech by Head Football Coach Jonathan Johnson and Relay for Life chair senior Trenton Johanson. Five members of the Delta Kappa Pi (DKP) fraternity shaved their heads as part of a partnership between DKP and Relay For Life.

Judging the skits this night were Vice President of Academic Affairs, Sue Larkin, Vice President of Student Affairs, Judy Kawamoto, Frees Hall Community Director, Luke Urbonavicius and Director of Health and Wellness, Andrea Baker.

The Alpha Omega (AO) fraternity kicked off skit night with a drink chugging line, which judge Baker thought represented the AOs well, saying, “It’s what you all are, as brothers.” The performances which followed included several recreations of iconic movie moments, dances, elaborate costumes, trumpet battles and split jumps galore.

The competition was fierce, with judges having positive things to say for all groups, including Kawamoto complimenting the Phi Sigma Tau sorority’s commitment, Baker saying DKP won the award for most costume changes in one skit and Larkin saying the Chi Delta sorority had “special effects for the win.”

However, the Gamma Phi Iota sorority swept the awards ceremony, winning best banner, shield, and window and tying with Chi Delta for skit. Student Body President, senior Morgan Smith, who is also a member of Gamma Phi Iota, announced the winners, including the winner of the spirit cup, the Gammas. She also gave a short speech honoring alumni, thanking the student body for electing her and speaking about how Doane’s community has helped her with her narcolepsy diagnosis last year.

Smith would win twice that night as she was announced Homecoming Duchess, along with senior Ryan Spieker being named Homecoming Duke.
