First-ever Relay for Life game show

Nearly every television on campus was tuned to a special event last Wednesday night. On Nov. 12, Doane’s Relay for Life committee organized a live-streamed game show.

Students were encouraged to watch in the cafeteria, where the dessert table was stacked high, featuring a special fried cheesecake topped with blueberry and strawberry sauce.

Four teams, each composed of four members, competed in the game show. Junior Barnabus Anderson and sophomores Trey Pulte and Joseph Seifferlein represented Delta Kappa Pi fraternity. Nurse Jody Yank, Elsy Sierra, and Abby Ulrich comprised the Phi Sigma Tau sorority team. Team Volleyball included sophomores Kate Roseland, Sydney Estill and Addison Harris, while Team Football was made up of sophomores Braden Hardin, Dylon Leuking and Koa Tauiliili.

Senior Rian Green and sophomore Ash Ambercrombie acted as the competition’s announcers and referees.

The first game, “Minute to Win It,” featured an Oreo challenge and a cup stacking event. Team Volleyball started with a strong lead but was unable to finish the game on time. Ultimately, Team Football finished first, taking the lead from the start of the night.

Next was “Relay for Life Jeopardy,” featuring categories such as Relay for Life History and Cancer Awareness. This round allowed Delta Kappa Pi to move ahead of Team Football, while Team Volleyball dropped to last place—a fact that Green playfully teased them about.

The final event of the night was “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” which included a wide array of trivia questions. Unsurprisingly to Green, Team Volleyball finished in last place. Team Football and Phi Sigma Tau were tied, but after a decisive game of rock-paper-scissors, Football claimed third place and Phi Sigma Tau took second, leaving Delta Kappa Pi as the overall winner of the event.

The next Relay for Life event will be “Giving Tuesday” on Dec. 2. The main Relay for Life event is scheduled for April 11 and will feature a jersey theme.
