Over the weekend, the Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams travelled to Lincoln, Nebraska to compete in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Fall Championships.
Starting in the Men’s singles was freshman Rodrigo Margañon Abad, where he won his first match 6-6, however fell back in the quarterfinals where he went 4-3. In the same flight were sophomores Jaime Asiain Banzo and Mats Vervloet. Asian Banzo won his match 3-6 along with Vervloet winning his as well 7-6. In the quarterfinals, Asian Banzo lost 1-3, with Vervloet losing 2-3 as well.
In flight three of the Men’s singles was junior Tanner Adams, where he won his first round by a forfeit, but lost in the quarterfinals 0-0. Finishing in flight five of the men’s singles was senior Julio Avila, where he won his first round 6-6, but unfortunately lost in the second round 3-6.
Transitioning into the Women’s singles in flight one was junior Liz Calderon, who won her first round by a forfeit, but lost 2-1 in her second round. In the same flight was senior Maria Purizaca where she won her first three rounds but came up short in the final round 3-2, which brought her second overall in the Women’s singles.
“During the match I was totally focused,” Purizaca said. “If the match is easy or medium then I’m just chilling not thinking about my match, but if it’s hard then I’m boosted with adrenaline and my body shakes because I am too focused.”
In the second flight, freshman Ana Paramas Sanchez won her first round 6-6, but fell short in her second round 3-2. In flight three was sophomore Elizabeth Roth, where she won her first round by a forfeit, but lost her second round 2-3. In the same flight was senior Isabella Castillero where she won her first and second round but lost her third round 2-2. In flight four was freshman Jorja Boller, who won her first two matches but lost her third 2-0. Finishing up the women’s single rounds was freshman Hailey Hopkinson, who won her first round but lost 3-3 in her second round.
Going into the Men’s doubles round flight one was freshmen Pablo Prieto Pelaez and Vervloet won their first round 6-1, but fell short 0-6 in their second round. In flight two were freshmen Ridge Stagner and Lancelot de Pierpont also won their first round 3-6, but lost 2-6 in their second round.
Transitioning into the Women’s doubles round flight one was Purizaca and senior Josline Carter who won their first round by a forfeit and lost 5-7 in the second round. In the same flight were Calderon and Paramas Sanchez, who also won their first round by a forfeit, but lost their second round 0-6.
In flight two, in the same bracket was sophomore Evelyn Kusek, Boller, freshman Nevaeh Guerin and Hopkinson. Kusek and Boller won their first round 6-1, but lost their second match 0-6, where Guerin and Hopkinson won their first match 6-2, but also lost 0-6 in their second round.
Next up, the Men’s and Women’s teams will be competing in the Doane Reserves Invite on Sept. 22 at home starting at 11:00 a.m.
