Over the weekend, the Doane Baseball team hosted Morningside University in back-to-back doubleheaders on their home field. Of the four games played, the Tigers split the wins 2-2 with the Mustangs.
The first game against the Mustangs was one of the lowest-scoring games for both teams out of the four. Despite this, Morningside was able to get on the board right away with one run in the first inning and Doane answered with one in the second.
Tied 1-1, the Tigers broke the tie with two runs in the fifth. The Mustangs attempted to comeback with one run in the sixth, but Doane shut that down with one of their own in the same inning. While Morningside added one last run in the seventh, it would not be enough to overthrow Doane and the Tigers took game one 4-3.
Game two got off to a bit of a slower start for both teams. The Mustangs scored first with two runs in the third inning, but the Tigers would not be outdone and added three runs in the same inning.
A few scoreless innings ensued before both teams would score again in the sixth inning: Morningside bringing in two runs while Doane added five of their own. Each team added one run in the seventh and the Tigers scored three more in the eighth to secure a 12-5 victory over the Mustangs. After two wins for Doane on the first day, they were back in action with a doubleheader against Morningside in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Mustangs struck first again with a single run in the first inning while the Tigers came back with two in the second inning.
Morningside began to heat up on offense as they brought in three runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth. Doane attempted to answer this with one run of their own in the fourth and three in the fifth. It would not be enough to topple the Mustangs’ lead, especially after they added two more in the seventh. Doane was handed their first loss in this series by Morningside with a final score of 8-6.
Much like the day before, the second game got off to a slower start as neither team brought in any runs until the third inning. Morningside kicked off the scoring with three runs while Doane collected one. Each team added one run in the fourth and the Tigers picked up one more run in the fifth.
Doane made an attempted comeback with two runs in the seventh inning and one run in the eighth. However, that comeback was shut down as the Mustangs added three runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Tigers 7-6.
The Doane Baseball team now waits to see who they take on in the Great Plains Athletic Conference Championships beginning on May 2.
