Doane hosted a Student Leadership Awards ceremony on May 5. There were eight total categories for awards and recognitions and they came from a variety of departments at Doane.
Some of the recipients included seniors Julia Ramirez, Payton Detavernier, Zach Turner, Quincey Johnson, Elsy Sierra-Valle, Chelsey Ordaz, Guy Moran, Landon Stocks, Kylie Hughes, Maci McCarter, Dani Avalos and McKenna Revis, juniors Rowan Jolkowski, Abby Ulrich, Haley Peek and Angel Lehn, sophomores Cody Lee Crist and Ella Frederick, freshman Aiden Jack, Omega Psi Theta Advisor Carol Mack and Professor Kim Jarvis.
“I think [the biggest hurdle] was just getting all of the students who participated in Student, Leadership, Recruitment, Selection, Training and Awards (SLARSTA) and getting students who are particularly busy this time of year [to attend],” Assistant Director of Campus Engagement Spencer Munson said.
The event was headlined by a dinner provided by Fresh Ideas including beef tips, chicken, roasted potatoes and vegetables, Italian salad, cheesecake, chocolate cake and dinner rolls.
“This is the first time that we have worked with Fresh Ideas for a big formal event, and they have been really amazing to work with, and I think that we have a really good team that is ready to help out,” Munson said.
In the past, these awards were awarded at three different ceremonies, Munson and his team have been working hard to bring them all together.
“We have been really trying to unify our efforts as part of what we call SLARSTA […] and so we are really trying to unify all of that so that we can get the most and best students hired, trained really well and award them. This is the third year of selection and training, and this year, we incorporated awards,” Munson said.
