Football falls to Dakota Wesleyan

On Oct. 12, the Tigers traveled to Mitchell, South Dakota, to compete against Dakota Wesleyan University, where they were defeated 21-47.

In the first quarter of the game, freshman Sam Hartman passed the ball to senior Nate Fox for a two-yard touchdown pass. Soon after the first touchdown, junior Reece Zutavern would receive the second touchdown of the game on a four-yard touchdown completion. This put the Tigers in the lead 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Tigers weren’t able to get any other touchdowns. However, the Tigers were able to block an extra point attempt for the first score. The same thing happened in the third quarter, where the Tigers were unable to get any touchdowns, but Dakota Wesleyan was able to score on all three possessions. The score was 21-40 after the third quarter.

Going into the final quarter of the game, Hartman was able to score on a quarterback keeper, and Dakota Wesleyan scored a final touchdown, which put the final score at 21-47.

Hartman finished the game 17-of-28 with 219 yards, two passing touchdowns, one rushing touchdown and 24 rushing yards. Junior Rian Green led the team with 104 rushing yards on 15 carries, and junior John DeRiso was the leading receiver with 130 yards on six receptions.

Also leading the team with seven tackles, four of them being solos, was junior Jarett Boggs. Adding another six tackles, having four solos, and posting 131 yards was freshman Andrew Brown. Finishing with five tackles, with three of them being solos, was sophomore Keegan Shuler.

The Tigers will return to action against Concordia University on Oct. 19 for the homecoming game, which is set to begin at 1 p.m.
