Hoopfest lets students ball out

On Oct.15, the eighth actual Hoopfest was held in Haddix arena at 7:00 p.m. The event included a faculty vs. staff basketball match, a student shooting contest, special prices and food from Runza and Dairy Queen for the first 75 students to arrive.

The event kicked off with a shooting contest and a lottery drawing for students who signed up at the entrance, accompanied by a performance from the cheer and dance team. During the lottery drawing, randomly selected students received prizes or were chosen to participate in the shooting contest. The contest involved dividing these randomly picked students into four groups, where they competed to attempt as many successful shots as possible.

The event continued with an exciting scrimmage featuring both the women’s and men’s basketball teams. Each team had the opportunity to showcase their skills and teamwork within a 10 minute single period.

The final and most anticipated event of the night was the faculty versus staff match. Each team had 10 participants. The faculty team, coached by President Roger Hughes, included Spencer Klocke, Colton Morrow-Merrill, Jeremy Caldwell, Carlos Palacios, Charlie Chappetto, Tony Odorsio, Ben Berreckman, Mallory McConkey, Charles Brewer, and John Frost. The student team, coached by Director of Residential Life and Education Brian Stutz, featured junior Isaiah Lohman, junior Tyler Stevens, senior Blake Skoumal, sophomore Eli Marez, sophomore Sam Hartman, senior Adam Wilmore, senior Guillermo Duenas, sophomore Nathan Shupe, senior Ryan Stratman, senior Angel Lehn and sophomore Michael Wiley. It was a closely contested match, but the student team came through, winning by just two points with a final score of 22-20.
