Students battle in pickleball

On March 3 at the Fieldhouse, the SPB (Student Programming Board) organized a pickleball tournament for every Doane student. For those who don’t know, pickleball is a sport that was invented in 1965 by three friends on Bainbridge Island (Washington) and has recently become a very popular sport around the world. It has had the greatest growth in the United States, but this sport has reached many countries and is gradually gaining more and more popularity.

So, the department had a great idea and created a doubles pickleball tournament. The tournament had different brackets and elimination games. The winning team was the first to achieve 11 points, and considering the real pickleball rules, you can only win a point if you are the team serving.

Overall, the tournament went really well and the environment was amazing. A lot of students had a good time playing the sport, a sport that for many was something new and that they were trying for the first time in their lives.

Sophomore Maria Purizaca and junior Jose Purizaca were the winners of the tournament with an 11-7 victory in the final and got a gift card to Casey’s as the prize.
