On May 31, the Black Student Alliance (BSA) hosted a brownie bake sale to raise money for the organization. At the event, club president  La Mia Benn and Vice President Kya Caddy represented the group and helped with the baking.

The event took place in Sheldon Hall at the same time as the second floor’s Tiger Tap-in. This overlap allowed many students the opportunity to engage with BSA members and learn more about the organization while still enjoying brownies and cartoons.

BSA hopes the money raised will support initiatives such as creating T-shirts, organizing field trips, and raising awareness of the organization and its goals

Some challenges faced while organizing the group were related to its new presence on campus. “It’s a new thing for everyone. BSA wasn’t really big on campus,” La Mia said, noting that not many students were aware of the organization. “BSA is for everyone. We want everyone to feel included on campus.”

Junior Ian Riles, who was also at the event and helped organize the money and baked goods, commented, “We’re holding the fundraiser to support the development of inclusive leaders on campus. We have a decent number of leaders, but we don’t have much representation of minorities.”

BSA hopes to expand its reach beyond the university and grow as a thriving student organization.

Freshman Brianna Wright, who attended the event, shared her excitement, saying, “I think there’s a great turnout. I can tell everyone is having a good time.”
