Hot Takes: Advice for new students

As you have been told probably dozens of times over the past week, welcome back to campus or welcome to campus. We are glad you are here. Well, I hope that your first week wasn’t too much trouble, because if I am going to be honest with you, that is just the beginning.

Now, since you have successfully survived your first week, or at least I hope you did, it is time to get into all of the things that you might not think are important, but unfortunately are.

First things first, now that you are living by yourself, you are responsible for personal hygiene. No one is going to remind you every day that you need to wash your clothes, clean your room, shower, etc., so do everyone around you a solid favor: take care of yourself.

Second, realize you don’t have to be friends with everyone. Do not change yourself to fit in with others. Be yourself, and if the people around you don’t like who you truly are, then they’re not for you. There are over 500 people on this campus; trust me, you’ll find someone.

Third, go to class. You’re paying so much to attend this university; if you don’t go to class, you’re wasting your money. Along with that, if you are on financial aid, you have to attend your classes or else that aid will go bye-bye. Don’t be on your phone while your professor is teaching; that’s just respect. If you have a full class, don’t switch up your seats. For the freshmen, don’t ask your professor if you can go to the bathroom.

Last but not least, have common sense. If you need help, go get help. If you see a car coming, don’t walk in the middle of the road. If you see someone struggling, help that person. If you don’t like how you’re being treated, speak up.

I know that college is scary for a variety of reasons; there’s the good, the bad and times where you don’t know what you’re doing, but trust me, it is worthwhile.
