Women’s wrestling kicks off season in Kansas

Women’s Wrestling started their season on Friday, Oct. 31, in Wichita, Kansas, at the Falcon Open. Four of the women’s team placed in each of their divisions. In total, the Women’s Wrestling team scored a total of 79.9 team points. 

In the varsity division, three Tigers placed on the podium. The varsity division put up 37.4 points in total at the Falcon Open. 

 In the weight class 103, senior Karina Vang scored 1 -2.  Vang scored 1 point for the Tigers.  On the other hand, Junior Kimberly Narrette lost 0-2 in her matches. In the weight class 117, Junior Angelica Vicente Gonzales placed 3rd. Her record was 2-1, and she scored 8.5 points for the team. 

Sophomore Keresten Flanagan, representing the weight class of 124, lost both of her matches. Senior Ashlee Palimos, representing the weight class 131, placed 4th while scoring 8.5 team points. In the weight class 138, Sophomore Payton Weese went 2-2 in her matches while scoring 6 team points. 

Junior Bridgette Sotomayor placed 4th in the women’s 145 weight class. She scored 3.5 team points. In the 160 weight class, Junior Aspen Barber scored 2-2 with 6.0 team points. The two competitors in the weight class 180 Sophomore Yazmin Belk won 1-2 while scoring 4 team points. The other competitor in the 180 weight class was senior Lamina Benn, going 0-2 in scoring. 

The last varsity wrestler in the weight class of 207, Hailey Romero, scored 0-2. In the freshman and sophomore division, there was one person who placed. In total, the freshman and sophomore division scored 42.5  team points. The first competitor in weight class 110, freshman Isabela Gutierre, scored 2-2 while scoring 5 team points. 

In the weight class 117, freshman Kairi Kutyba scored 0-2 in her matches. The two competitors in 124, freshman Bettie Chambers, scored 7.5 team points while scoring 3-2. The second competitor of the weight class 124 freshman Saije Phelps scored 2-2 while scoring 5 team points. 

The only competitor in the weight class 131 freshman Sienna Long went 2-2 while scoring 5.5 team points. In the weight class 145, freshman Avan Wilkie scored 0-2. 

Two competitors in the 180 weight class, sophomore Aileen Rueda, went 0-2 in her matches. The other wrestler in the weight class 180, freshman Kayla Mclearen, went 3-2 while scoring 6 team points. 

In the last weight class of 207, two competitors scored 13.5 points in total. Sophomore Lilannna Martinez is going 0-2. The only freshman placer was freshman Jessica Rodriguez, placing 1st, going 2-0. She scored 13.5 points for the Tigers. 

Women’s wrestling will be traveling to Forest City, Iowa, to compete in the Waldorf Open on Nov. 8.
