Women’s Tennis finishes season placing 3rd at GPAC

The Doane women’s tennis team traveled to Omaha, Nebraska, to compete in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Tournament at the Hanscomb Indoor Tennis Center on Thursday, April 23.

In their opening match of the day, the Tigers delivered a commanding 4-0 sweep over Hastings College. Doane set the tone early in doubles play, with the number one duo of junior Maria Purizaca and sophomore Liz Calderon securing a 6-2 victory. Senior Grace Schroller and junior Kat Johnson also won convincingly at the number two doubles spot with a 6-1 finish. The momentum carried over into singles play, where Purizaca won her number one matchup 6-1, 6-0. Calderon earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory at number two singles. Additionally, Johnson won 6-0, 6-2 at number three, and senior Alejandra Prat cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at the number six singles position.

Later in the tournament, the Tigers faced off against Concordia University and ultimately fell by a score of 4-0. Purizaca and Calderon remained a bright spot in doubles, capturing another 6-2 win at the number one position. However, Concordia secured the overall doubles point after winning 6-3 at number two and edging out a close 7-6 (7-5) tiebreaker victory at number three. In singles action, the Bulldogs secured the team victory with straight-set wins at the number four (6-2, 6-4), number five (6-1, 6-1), and number six (6-2, 6-3) spots. With the conclusion of the GPAC Tournament, the Tigers have officially wrapped up their tennis season.
