When I was seven, I was introduced to the “Twilight Saga” by my crazy, obsessed sister who made it her whole personality. Now, I am not talking about pretending to be Bella and hoping that she would find her Edward or Jacob, but instead she made it KNOWN that she was on Team Jacob, but I digress.
We have officially entered the fall season. Some of us, like myself, have been patiently waiting for this season to come, while others are secretly wanting the summer season to be a tad bit longer. But if you asked any person who has watched this series, they would tell you it’s “Twilight season”.
Over the past couple of weeks, I have watched this series at least three times all the way through. Whether it was me watching it with my roommates on a nice Tuesday night or watching it with the amazing Owl editors, I could never get enough of it.
But the main question that always gets asked is “Team Edward or Team Jacob?” and that is what this is all about.
Over the course of rewatching these movies, I have found that both of them have major red flags. For example, Edward’s major red flag is that he confuses protecting Bella with having control over Bella. But Jacobs’ red flag gives off “I know you said no, but I’m going to keep pushing because I think you’ll eventually realize you want me.”
So after years of being asked the same question and constantly changing my side, I finally came to the conclusion that I’m not on either team. And yes, I know; how can someone watch five movies about a love triangle between a vampire, a werewolf and a very emotionally confused girl and not pick a side? But hear me out.
Edward spends a concerning amount of time watching Bella while she sleeps, makes decisions for her and disappears whenever he decides that he is “too dangerous” for Bella. On the other hand, Jacob treats Bella saying no like it is simply a suggestion. But somehow, both of these men manage to make being in love look like a full-time job with absolutely no respect for personal boundaries.
Yet, every time I rewatch these movies, I still find myself debating which one I would choose, but maybe that’s the whole point. It makes us spend hours arguing over which red flag we would rather have instead of asking why Bella couldn’t just move to a new town and start fresh.
So, Team Edward or Team Jacob? My answer is simple: Team Bella needs to go to therapy. And honestly, so do I, mainly because I will probably be watching “Twilight” the next time a gloomy day rolls around.
