Community grieves tragic loss of Doane student and alum

The following story deals with themes and personal narratives of death. Doane offers free counseling for students. Grief has no timeline.

On Friday, Oct. 16, President Roger Hughes released a statement about the tragic deaths of two members of the Doane community. Senior Jessica Villanueva passed away on Oct. 14, 2026, and Alum Ian Riles ‘25 passed away on Oct. 16, 2026, in an incident in San Antonio, Texas.

In her time at Doane, Villanueva pursued software engineering and was a former member of the women’s wrestling team, set to graduate this fall. She was also a former wrestling state champion and cheerleader. She was described as kind, passionate and talented.

On Oct. 18, a candlelight vigil was held for Villanueva in Cassel Theatre. Students, staff, faculty and other members of the Doane community came together to remember her and share stories, memories and words of comfort. Merrill Bell Tower was lit up with lavender, Villanueva’s favorite color.

Villanueva’s funeral was held on Oct. 21 in San Juan, Texas. That same day, a table was set up in Lakeside where people could leave messages honoring Villanueva.

Villanueva’s family has set up a GoFundMe to help with funeral costs.

All students can access free counseling. Appointments can be scheduled with Darcy Dawson (darcy.dawson@doane.edu), Myron Parsley (myron.parsley@doane.edu) and Mindy Parker (mindy.parker@doane.edu). Parker should be contacted for students on non-residential campuses.
