The Baseball team played four games to kick off the start of March. The Tigers spent the weekend in St. Louis, Missouri to play doubleheaders against Missouri Baptist University and Clarke University.
On March 1, Doane played their first game against Missouri Baptist. Both teams jumped out to a similar start, putting up two runs in the first inning. However, Missouri Baptist would proceed to go scoreless in the next three innings while the Tigers scored in all three.
The Tigers added another two runs in the second inning, three more in the third and five in the fourth. Doane was up 12-2 after their hot streak when Missouri Baptist stepped up on defense.
No runs were put on the scoreboard in the fifth, and Missouri Baptist added a singular run in the sixth inning. In the final inning, both teams finished the game the way they started: with two runs each. The Tiger would win the first game in the series 14-5.
Doane continued to dominate in the rematch the following day. Despite a slow start in the first two innings, the Tigers were still the first ones on the board with two runs in the third inning.
The game continued scoreless for the next few innings until there was a breakthrough in the sixth inning. Seven runs were brought in by Doane, putting them up 9-0. Although Missouri Baptist was able to get on the scoreboard in the seventh inning with two runs, the Tigers held strong and went on to win 9-2.
Later that same day, the Tigers kicked off their second doubleheader against Clarke University. Despite the lack of rest, Doane continued to dominate on the field, scoring in every inning except one.
While both teams scored in the first two innings, Doane put up six runs to Clarke’s two. After runs were exchanged back and forth, both teams took the third inning off. While Clarke’s scoring drought continued into the fourth and fifth inning, Doane added three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Clarke attempted to pull themselves back within reaching distance of Doane with a single run in the sixth. However, the Tigers had a big inning and added five runs to their lead, putting them up 16-3. After Clarke was unable to get a run in the top of the seventh, the game ended with yet another win for Doane.
On March 3, Doane played their final game of the weekend against Clarke University. The Tigers were yet again first on the scoreboard, bringing in three runs to start the third inning. Clarke and Doane exchanged one run in each between the fourth and fifth inning. Clarke added their second run in the sixth inning, and the game sat scoreless for a while as Doane led 4-2. In the final two innings, Doane added two runs in each and won the game with a more impressive score of 8-2.
Doane Baseball will have two sets of doubleheaders in the next week. On March 8 and 9, the Tigers will take on St. Ambrose University before facing off against Missouri Baptist University again on March 9.
