Doane’s Overwatch 2 team, a part of the Esports coalition at Doane University, is in the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC). Currently, Doane is in the semifinals with Tarleton.
Doane’s Overwatch 2 team has been performing very well this season, with a win-loss record of 3-2, with their only losses being against the University of Nebraska at Kearney which was a 0-3 loss and the team only had their reserves, and Kansas State which was close at 2-3. Overwatch 2 is a team based first person shooter that has teams formed usually as follows: a tank, a support, two to three Damage Per Second (DPS) or a sniper.
The role of the tank is, as the name sounds, to tank the damage and allow the DPS to get around them. The DPS are the people who do the most amount of damage in the shortest amount of time. The support is the backbone of the team. Their role is to make sure that everybody else has a good amount of health and to resurrect teammates if their character’s ability allows for it.
“I’m feeling pretty good. We’ve managed to win in scrimmages against higher ranked teams. There’s still a fair amount of nerves going in but we’re ready to perform,” sophomore and Captain of and tank for Overwatch 2 team Jamey Rhea said.
His teammates share the sentiment. “We have had success as a team and are working to be more in sync. [I’m] feeling confident in our ability to work together.” freshman and DPS Sam Hartman said. “Personally, I’m feeling quite a bit nervous, I know for me especially there’s a lot of things that I want to get right just to prove that I deserve my place here,” sophomore and Support Mady TenEyck said.
The Overwatch 2 matches will be streamed at twitch.tv/doaneesports, where people can watch the team take on Tarleton this Thursday at 4 p.m. The match will decide whether or not the team gets to go on to the finals, where they potentially can have a rematch with Kansas State.
