On April 2, the Student Programming Board (SPB) continued its SPB Foodie Series with Sushi Night, and it was a rebound compared to the last Foodie Series, with a far stronger student showing than the previous Foodie Series.
SPB Chair Sophomore Jessica Villanueva said that there were a lot of people.
“I think we had a really good turnout and I hope more students come next year,” Villanueva said. “Whenever we have events like this a lot of people and students are talking to each other, it makes Doane become one and more connected.”
Villanueva and many of the SPB members worked tirelessly to field a hungry line of students. Each of the students had the opportunity to make and roll their own sushi. They could choose between crab, salmon, shrimp and multiple vegetables to add to their rolls. Then, students had to mimetically roll their sushi and have a Doane chef cut their rolls. Villanueva and much of SPB were excited that students took a swing at this event and tried to make a food that many would not normally try.
“We want to highlight different cultures with these events. We also want to try and have foods that are easy and students can do in their dorm rooms or at their house. That’s one of the main reasons we have the Foodie Series, so we can show you foods that are accessible and easy to make,” Villanueva said.
Sushi might not be the easiest thing for students to make, but SPB’s Foodie Series showed students that it is possible to make sushi, if not without a little bit of practice. Currently, there is no future SPB Foodie Series announced yet, but SPB will be hosting more events through the end of the semester.
