On April 30, Doane hosted an honor society induction for the Social Sciences and Modern Languages event, where new members were inducted into one of six honor societies: Pi Sigma Alpha (political science), Phi Alpha Theta (history), Phi Sigma Iota (languages), Alpha Kappa Delta (sociology), Psi Chi (psychology) and Sigma Delta Pi (Spanish).

Each of these honor societies represents the peak of their major’s accomplishments, with some of them being older than 100 years old. The honor societies are meant to highlight the students in their respective majors who go above and beyond in the normal work asked of them.

Students are admitted into the honor societies based on their having met the designated academic criteria. Once inducted into the honors society, students will have scholarships opportunities for undergraduate or graduate school, access to research for potential projects and will be connected with other members such as other alumni of the honors society for postgraduate opportunities.

This year, well over a dozen students met the criteria for their respective honor societies, and they hope to use the resources the honors society provides to further their education or careers in their respective fields. All the seniors who are inducted or currently inducted received a cord for graduation.

At the event two professors set to leave Doane were also recognized for their contributions to Doane University: Associate Professor of Sociology Nathan Erickson, who has been at Doane for over a decade, and Associate Professor of Spanish Jared List, who has been at Doane for 11 years.

A previous version of this article misstated the process by which students are admitted to the honor societies, Dr. Erickson’s job title, and the number of years Dr. List has been at Doane. The Owl regrets the errors.
