Doane Dialogues is hosting a series of events at Doane that aims to build bridges between people of different beliefs by talking about controversial issues. The series runs annually and this is a redux of the original event.
The events feature panelists who come together to discuss important issues. The speakers do not have to agree with each other on the issues, but they do attempt to see the common ground that they share. For this week’s session, which is held on April 3, panelists are discussing book bans. “Students should expect a space to hear, reflect and possibly share on diverse viewpoints of certain topics, this week being banned books,” Specialist for the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Wendy Huntsmann said.
On April 10, the topic that the panelists will be discussing is reproductive rights. During the final session of the series, which is on April 17, the issue that the panelists will be talking about is immigration.
“The aim of impact is to establish a community here at Doane that is inclusive of diverse perspectives, viewpoints and lived experiences. We are hoping Doane Dialogues can be a space for discussion and not debate of topics that affect our society,” Huntsmann said.
To go to the events, interested students have to RSVP in order to attend
the event. Students who go to two out of the three events get a designation that they can show off at the annual Doane Dialogues reception event.
For this first event, the panelists that will be discussing book bans are Online Learning & Student Services Librarian Cali Biaggi and Director of the Writing Center Jeremy Caldwell.
