This past week, Alpha Pi Epsilon fraternity, otherwise known as the APEs, hosted their annual philanthropy event: Summer’s End Xtravaganza (S.E.X.). The purpose of this weeklong event is to educate campus on safe sex practices and proper consent. This year’s S.E.X. lasted four days with each night having a specific theme and event to go off of it.
On Tuesday, the APEs collaborated with Campus Advocacy and Prevention Education (CAPE) Project to host a bonfire as the first night of S.E.X. CAPE put on their annual “Burn Your Trauma” event with the Safe Sex Trivia and s’mores the APEs were doing. This was a way to help out CAPE with scheduling their event as well as bringing the two communities together. This first night was held on the Smith patio and had a large group of both APEs and CAPE Members running their respective parts of the event with a large turnout of people there to enjoy what was offered.
Wednesday was a “super awesome tie dye fight” by the sand volleyball courts behind Frees Hall. People could bring their 2026 S.E.X. T-shirts, which were sold at each night of the event and white this year, or anything else they wanted to tie dye. Attendees could either shoot ink and each other from water guns or participate in regular tie dye at a table off to the side. This event had the lowest turnout of the week, but those who went had a great time and got to customize their shirts together as music played in the background.
On Thursday they held a “Red Flag” Movie Night where attendees could come and enjoy a mystery movie and raise their red flags when they saw bad behavior from one of the characters. These flags were made and decorated by the APEs and passed out as attendees entered Frees movie theater. The movie selected was “10 Things I Hate About You”, and a lot of red flags were raised by viewers throughout the duration of the movie. The APEs served popcorn and enjoyed a calm movie night with those who showed up.
The last day of Summer’s End Xtravaganza was the “Summer’s End Carnival”. This event consisted of different carnival games, a fortune teller, raffle prizes, live music from John Voyage, and a foam sword fight. They also hosted “Pie a President” where people could pay to pie the sorority and fraternity presidents. It was originally going to be a raffle for one pie per president, but due to the success of it, they changed it to a dollar a pie, which ended up with a lot of Greek members pieing their presidents multiple times. After the festivities outside, attendees moved inside to do sex trivia hosted by Jody Yank. Teams were made and they each had to answer questions about things such as random sex facts, STDs/STIs, anatomy, and more. Due to a technical difficulty, the APEs decided to announce raffle winners while the trivia was being fixed. Prizes such as Vala’s giftcards, a 3ft HDMI cord, tickets to the Crete Isis Theater, a sled, condoms, the “mystery prize”, and many more were distributed. After this, trivia continued. The winning team, “Sexy Sigmas”, which consisted of a group of girls from Phi Sigma Tau sorority, won gift cards to split among them.
With this, Summer’s End officially came to an end. It was an event filled week with the planning being spearheaded by junior Joe Reimer, the 2026 S.E.X. Coordinator.
“Planning started in May”, Reimer said, “It’s been a lot of organizing things, reaching out to businesses, meeting over the summer online to plan cohesive nights that all worked together really well”. As the coordinator of the entire event, Reimer expressed that it was a chaotic process and he relied a lot on the other APEs for help and support. There were some parts that were also challenging for Reimer as there were a lot of changes in Doane faculty so points of communication for him kept changing.
In the end, Alpha Pi Epsilon fraternity raised around $720 with $180 of 25% of the proceeds going to Hope Crisis Center. This was the most profitable this event has been the past 4 years and the total attendance was higher than last year as well. A lot of attendees of the event this year thought it was more fun and successful than previous years as well.
