The Doane women’s tennis team continued its rigorous conference schedule this week with back-to-back matchups against Midland University and Concordia University.
The action began on Tuesday, April 14, as the Tigers traveled to Fremont to take on Midland. In doubles play, the duo of junior Maria Purizaca and sophomore Liz Calderon earned a 6-4 victory at the number one spot, though the Warriors managed to claim the overall doubles point. Moving into singles, Purizaca delivered a strong performance at the number one position with a 7-5, 6-1 win, and Calderon followed with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory in the second slot. Senior Alejandra Prat also secured a point for the Tigers at number six singles (7-5, 6-0). Despite these hard-fought individual wins, Midland ultimately edged out a 4-3 team victory.
The following day, Wednesday, April 15, the Tigers returned home to the Newburg Held Tennis Complex to host a strong Concordia squad. Purizaca and Calderon once again showcased their chemistry in doubles, winning a tight 7-6 match at the number one position. Purizaca carried that momentum into her singles match, earning a commanding 6-0, 6-1 victory at the top of the lineup. While the rest of the roster competed fiercely, including Prat taking her match to a third set, the Bulldogs proved to be a difficult opponent, coming away with a 6-1 win.
The Tigers will now prepare for the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Tournament, which is scheduled to begin on Thursday, April 23, in Omaha, Nebraska.
